Why

Stories are powerful in human communication. An authentic and compelling brand story helps your audience remember who you are, what you stand for, develop empathy and ultimately, want to take part in your story (buy your product).

At the core of the brand story development is sharing ‘Why’ or ‘The purpose’ of your product’s existence. In a successful brand story, the customer should feel an emotional connection to what your brand represents. For instance, Apple - ‘To Think Different’, Volkswagen - ‘Safety’, Facebook - ‘Connecting people’ and so on.

Keep your customer (Hero) at the epicenter

One common mistake most companies does is putting the product/company as the HERO of the brand story. The HERO of the brand story should be your customer. Your role is to be the ‘guide’ who helps the customer (hero) achieve a goal by defeating the villain (the problem).

The ‘Building a Story Brand’ book by Donald Miller gives a great framework to build a compelling brand story by using story telling techniques used by movies and books.

Make your purpose clear

“People don’t buy What you do; they buy Why you do it. And What you do simply proves what you Believe” - Simon Sinek.

The ‘Golden Circle’ principle by Simon Sinek guides one on how to logically explain a product or a service to the customer in a way that it triggers neurological decision making. Such stories trigger the limbic brain, which is in control of the emotional (empathy) aspect of decision making. For instance, when a decision maker is given two options that have identical physical properties, the decision favours the one that triggers the emotional aspect (gut feeling/intuition).

  • Why : Explain your purpose, and the reason you exist and behave as you do.
  • How : How to do something.
  • What : What sort of things to do.
